Criticised for inaction over the purported mass molestation of women on New Year's Eve last year, the civic authorities are taking extra precautions this time.
Mayor R Sampath Raj has ordered BBMP and police officials to instal CCTV cameras on MG Road and Brigade Road, the city's party hubs. He has also directed that large LED screens be installed on these localities to avert any harassment of, or discomfort to, female revellers.
The mayor will also write to the BMRCL to run metro trains round the clock on December 31.
BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said there were plans to make CCTV cameras mandatory in commercial complexes. The civic body will not renew the trade licences in case of violations. "Traders must show the CCTV footage to the police whenever asked. We are planning to bring a rule to this effect next year," he added.
Raj had recently said that Rs 10 lakh had been allotted to each BBMP ward for installation of CCTV cameras. Besides, a centralised control room will be opened where all control rooms can be monitored.
