BBMP finally takes Swachh Survekshan survey seriously

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is making an all-out effort to get into the list of 10 cities in the Swachh Survekshan (cleanliness survey) in 2018.

This year, the Quality Council of India (QCI) assessed 434 cities and towns across India and Bengaluru was ranked in the 210th position.

The Palike invited officials from Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) on Wednesday during the council meeting to make a presentation about various factors that would be considered during the survey.

The MCC has successfully made in the top ten list of Swachh Survekshan ranking. In 2016, Mysuru was in the number one position, during 2017 it fell to 5th position. Bengaluru which was ranked 38 in 2016 slipped to 201 position in 2017.

Dr Nagaraj, Chief Health Officer of MCC gave a detailed presentation on various factors that will be considered in the survey.

"Open defecation, waste disposal, waste management and segregation, attendance of pourakarmikas are key factors that will be considered during the survey," he said.

Giving details about open defecation factor, Dr Nagaraj said: "Corporation should submit proposals to end open defecation that meet the QCI standards. Each proposal attested by the corporator should have signatures of students of at least five to six schools in the ward."

In 2017 survey, there were 600 points allotted for open defecation prevention and Bengaluru lost all those. Only 68 out of 198 wards had submitted proposals to end open defecation that met the QCI standards.

In this regard, Mayor R Sampath Raj directed the officials to ensure that each of the 198 wards has its proposal for the upcoming survey.

Speaking to DH, Sandhya Narayanan, member of Solid Waste Management(SWM) roundtable said that the scale of the city is very large we hope that city will rank much greater compared to last year.
