The city is increasingly witnessing patients with head and neck cancer that is particularly caused due to human papillomavirus (HPV).

The virus (HPV) in human genitalia is increasingly becoming a cause for cancer in the back of the throat and tonsils.

According to doctors, around 20% to 35% patients who approach hospitals with head and neck cancer is due to the HPV - an infection that is sexually transmitted.

"The HPV can be of various kinds. It can either cause cancer, warts or have no effect at all," said Dr Kirthi Koushik, associate professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, MS Ramaiah Medical College and Hospital.

In India, the incidence is around 23 per lakh and we see around one case per day at the hospital, she added.

Dr Vikram Kekatpure, Senior Consultant, Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, Cytecare Hospital said the disease is mostly found in people in the age group of 30 to 50-years.
