Yogi's 18-hr workday prescription rubs govt doc the wrong way

Last Updated 24 November 2017, 14:00 IST

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath may be pressing the officials to work for 18 hours a day but according to a  senior government doctor, working for long hours is not only ''harmful'' for health but is also a ''violation'' of fundamental rights.

Additional chief medical officer of UP's Kaushambi district, Dr B K Singh, has written a letter to senior officials stating that holding meetings and doing work after office hours adversely affects health.

''It is wrong to fix meetings after office hours...working from ten to five is what the officials are required to do,'' Singh said in his letter to the district magistrate and other senior government officials.

''It also is a violation of Right to Live, which is a fundamental right,'' he went on to add.

According to sources in the health ministry, the letter has created ripples in   official circles as the chief minister reportedly works for around 18 hrs a day.

Sources said that the government was contemplating stern action against the doctor. ''Some people just do not want to work....writing such a letter is also an act of indiscipline,'' said a senior health department official here.

Ever since Adityanath assumed charge of the state in March this year, he orally instructed officials to work for longer hours to expedite official business.

''Those who cannot work for 18 hours a day should resign and make way for those who can,'' Adityanath had told the government officials after being anointed the chief minister of the state.

Forced retirement

Adityanath has himself been chairing meetings and reviewing works of different departments well into evenings and sometimes till midnight.

Scores of senior officials from different departments had been compulsorily retired by the state government as part of an exercise to remove slack and inefficient babus.
