Consumers owe MCC Rs 12.64 crore in water bills

About 4,301 consumers owe Rs 12,64,36,759 to Mangaluru City Corporation in water bills. These consumers have pending bills above Rs 10,000, said Mayor Kavitha Sanil.

To a query by the media here on Tuesday, she said that there are 87,773 water connections in Mangaluru city corporation jurisdiction which comprise 80,612 domestic connections, 4,869 non -domestic connections, 1,034 commercial connections and 1,251 connections for construction works.

After the mayor requested all consumers in the city to make payment dues to avoid disconnections in August, a sum of Rs 3.20 crore has been paid by the consumers. In fact, the MCC has collected Rs 13 lakh water bill by visiting the defaulters.

Mangaluru city gets an average of 160 MLD of water from its vented dam in Thumbe every day.

She added that the consumers need not visit the MCC and stand in a queue to pay the water bills. Instead, the consumers in the city can pay their bills to the Mangaluru City Corporation and apply for new connection online now.

People will have to log on to www.mangalorecity.mrc.gov.in and then go to mcc online services, sign up and use listed services sections.

The BJP corporators in the city corporation have been claiming that there are a huge illegal water connections in the city. "If they have proof, let them come with me to raid and disconnect illegal water connections," Kavitha offered.

The Mayor also said that the collection of property tax under SAS was only 42% till September end. "If the citizens fail to pay taxes, how can the  MCC   initiate development works in its jurisdiction?" she asked. Even traders have failed to renew their trade licenses, she said.

The mayor said that the entrance to the Nehru Maidan will be developed at a cost of Rs 25 lakh. The entrance gate is being constructed to beautify the park, she added.  

Assistant Executive Engineer Naresh Shenoy said that 38 illegal water connections have been disconnected in Mangaluru, after Mayor disconnected the water supply from an apartment on October 9.
