The High Court of Karnataka on Monday issued notices to the state DGP&IGP, ADGP (Grievances and Human Rights), Mangaluru City Commissioner and others on a contempt petition.

A division bench headed by Justice B S Patil issued notices to the respondents, including sub-inspector of Mangaluru North police station and inspector Shantaram, on the petition filed by a jeweller from Mangaluru. The petitioners, Vidyananda Rao and his family members, alleged that he and his wife were detained by Mangaluru north station police in July 2017 in violation of rules.

It was alleged that the police registered false cases against Rao and his wife Lalitha Rao stating they pledged fake gold jewellery with a local bank. The petitioners contended that despite approaching the senior police officials with the grievance, neither the ADGP nor the DGP took any action.
