Matheran toy train resume services

After nearly 18 months, the famous toy train in the popular hill station of Matheran resumed services on Monday.

Matheran is in Karjat tehsil of Raigad district, around 100 km from Mumbai.

Matheran is the smallest hill station in India on the Western Ghats at an elevation of around 800 m (2,625 feet) above sea level.

The Matheran Hill Railway, a narrow-gauge heritage railway, that comes under the network of Central Railway (CR), covers a distance of nearly 21 km from Neral to Matheran.

On Monday, the train resumed services on the critical Matheran-Aman Lodge sector, a 3.5 km journey.

"We are planning to restart services on the entire 21-km Neral-Matheran route as soon as possible," CR officials said.

During the heavy rain in May 2016, the infrastructure suffered severe damage and the services were stopped.

In 2005, the Neral-Matheran light railway was added in the UNESCO's tentative heritage list.
