Spain's Fernandez triumphs in trap with a world record

Spain's Alberto Fernandez clinched the gold medal with a world record in the men's trap event of World Cup Final at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range on Sunday.

The 34-year-old Spaniard hit 48 out of the 50 targets in the final to place himself atop the podium. Italy's reigning world champion Daniele Resca (46) won the silver while the bronze went to Croatia's Giovanni Cernogoraz (37), the 2012 Olympic champion and the winner of this event in the last two years.

But on Sunday it was Fernandez who put up a dominating show in the concluding event of the championship. With remarkable consistency, he successfully staved off the steady comeback by Resca, who narrowly missed adding another title to the World Championship gold he had won in Moscow last month.

Resca's silver contributed to Italy finishing on the top of the medals tally. With two gold medals, three silvers and one bronze medal, Italy pipped China who ended up with two gold, two silver and five bronze medals in second place.

India finished seventh with one gold, one silver and one bronze. They won the gold through Heena Sidhu and Jitu Rai in 10M air pistol mixed team, Sangram Dahiya fetched the silver in men's double trap and Amanpreet Singh bronze in men's 50M pistol.

Raynaud sparkles

In the morning, France's Alexis Raynaud (461.7 points) secured the gold in 50M rifle 3-position. The 18-year-old Czech Filip Nepejchal (458.5) and Hungary's Istvan Peni (449.1) took silver and bronze. Istvan's bronze was in addition to his men's 10M air rifle gold.

The 23-year-old Frenchman led through the final, and increased the lead to 1.8-point at the end of the second standing series. From there, Raynaud was consistent in his scores and signed off with a 10.8 on his final shot.

In the men's 25M rapid fire pistol, 42-year-old Keith Sanderson, who recently retired from the US army, claimed the gold (33 hits), ahead of France's Clement Bessaguet (29) and Republic of Korea's first-time participant Song Jong Ho (24).

In the ISSF Champion of Champions event, where all medal winners in the rifle and pistol events could compete for a purse of 5000 euros each, China's Rio 2016 10M air pistol women's champion Mengxue Zhang and Gengcheng Sui were crowned the winners in pistol and rifle respectively.
