Rowdy shot at for attacking police inspector

Last Updated 15 October 2017, 21:28 IST
The police arrested a 27-year-old history-sheeter three hours after he assaulted a police constable who stopped his bike for checking in Halasuru in the wee hours on Sunday.

The Halasuru police identified the suspect as Karthik, a resident of Gowthampura near Halasuru.

The police, who were on night patrol and checking motorists around 2.40 am on Sunday, asked Karthik to stop. Instead of stopping, Karthik stabbed police constable Basavaraj Kanijar with a knife and escaped.

The police then informed the control room and messages were sent to all night-beat policemen to keep a strict vigil and set up checkpoints. After three hours, police found him near Halasuru Lake and asked him to surrender. But Karthik again tried to attack the police with a knife. The police opened fire on his right leg in self-defence before arresting him around 5.30 am near Halasuru Lake.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Ajay Hilori said Karthik collapsed on the spot and was later shifted to Hosmat Hospital for treatment. The injured constable Basavaraj was also admitted to the same hospital and doctors said both are out of danger.

There are five criminal cases against Karthik and Halasuru police have registered an attempt to murder case and for assaulting a policeman on duty following a complaint by Basavaraj.
