Standard Chartered's GBS to double headcount in Bengaluru

Last Updated 10 October 2017, 19:21 IST

Standard Chartered Bank, which on Tuesday opened its new Global Business Services (GBS) in Bengaluru, plans to double its workforce in the city from the present 3,300 to 6,000.

The increase in headcount will be both - internal moves as well as selective hiring. In the next few years, the bank expects to have 30% of GBS employees based in Bengaluru.

“This GBS centre is a multi-million dollar investment, and a part of the bank’s strategy to invest $3 billion over three years in technology and systems. This centre will complement our existing centres in China, India and Malaysia,” Standard Chartered Group CIO Michael Gorriz said.

At present, 14,000 people are working in GBS centres in both Chennai and Bengaluru. The centre will deliver global support, client due diligence and advisory services for corporate and institutional banking, retail banking, risk management and finance, among others.

The Bengaluru centre will also house the bank’s global centre of excellence in specialised areas like data analytics, software development, anti-money laundering, financial crime surveillance and financial control. It will serve 68 markets across the globe.

Standard Chartered Bank CEO Zarin Daruwala said India is among the top four markets for Standard Chartered. “We are seeing 29% growth Y-o-Y in online customer base and 80% Y-o-Y in mobile customer base,” Daruwala said.

She added, “As we move towards deeper digitsation, people who form a part of the technology-underpinned value chain will play an increasingly leading-edge role in shaping the banking and financial services landscape. Standard Chartered GBS India will help maintain our competitive edge in the dynamic and ever-evolving global banking industry.”
