Deputy Commissioner S B Bommanahalli stated that the credit of introducing ‘Ram Rajya’ to the entire world goes to Maharshi Valmiki. His greatest work ‘Ramayana’, which has social justice and human values is a guide to the society, he added.

With an intention to remember Valmiki forever, the State Government has installed the statue of Maharshi Valmiki in front of the Vidhan Soudha, and has also constructed a tapovan, he said.

Mr Bommanahalli noted this while speaking after inaugurating the Maharshi Valmiki jayanti organised jointly by the district administration, zilla panchayat, Social Welfare Department, and Kannada & Culture Department at Karnatak Vidyavardhakh Sangha in Dharwad on Thursday.

He further said, Mahatma Gandhi too was inspired by ‘Valmiki Ramayana’ and gave a call for making India a ‘Ram Rajya’. The State Government has sanctioned Valmiki Bhavan to Dharwad and has also earmarked funds. Efforts are on to find a suitable place to construct the bhavan, he said.

The jayanti celebrations should not be restricted to one particular community, as Valmiki’s teachings were relevant to all sections of society. People should work towards imbibing the ideals of Valmiki, to ensure peace and harmony in society, he said, adding that celebrating the birth anniversary of these icons will be meaningless without following their ideals.

‘Shelter to Seeta’
Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner M N Nagaraj said, it was Valmiki who gave shelter to Seeta and imparted training on war skills to her children Luv and Kush. Valmiki had high regards for women and advocated for their empowerment. An enlightened society could be set up only if women are educated and empowered, he added.

Delivering a special lecture, Dr Sharanamma Gorebal said, Ratnakar, who was born and brought up in the forest, was guided by Narada. He treaded his path and started meditation. This helped him to transform his life and author the greatest epic of all times ‘Ramayana’. This epic is a torch-bearer to mankind to establish peace and brotherhood in society, she added.

‘Statesman’
Valmiki was not only a poet, but also a statesman, educationist, and a philosopher. Valmiki community rulers including Kumaram, Hakka-Bukka, Halagali Bedavas, Sindhur Laxman, and others were known for their valours. British historian V A Smith, in one of his book, has written that no community in the world is as strong as Bedavas, she added.

On the occasion, 10 students from the community who have scored high marks in the SSLC examinations were felicitated.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Ibrahim Maigur, Karnataka Balvikas Academy Chairman Vedavyas Koulagi, Assistant Commissioner Mahesh Karjagi, Mohan Nagammanavar, DHO R M Doddmani, and others were present on the occasion.
