Cauvery underpass closed again due to waterlogging

Last Updated 03 October 2017, 20:04 IST
Within a week after the reopening of renovated Cauvery Junction underpass and white-topping of the road, the underpass has been closed yet again due to waterlogging problems.
After the heavy rainfall, the underpass here has accumulated rainwater and there has been no way for the water to drain out.

Though it has been three days since the rainwater accumulation, no action has been taken except barricading the underpass and stopping the motorists from entering the path. Even on the first day of reopening of the stretch, the motorists were not very happy with the quality of the work as the sewage water was flowing on the road. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials had blamed Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for not laying the drainage pipes properly.

“There is a lack of coordination between the two government bodies. This problem has always remained since a long time,” said Ananth P, a commuter who was using the stretch for a few days.

He also said that the level of pipelines and the drain is much lower than the underpass which causes waterlogging.

The project which was undertaken at a cost of Rs 1.65 crore was built in 2008 and the problem of opening and closing the underpass due to waterlogging has been a constant complaint eversince.

“The narrow road in this underpass has always been a problem. It is much better to find an alternative solution for this road,” Nandini Jayaram, another commuter, said.

Senior Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike officials and Somashekar S, chief engineer (projects), were not available for comments.
