Last Updated 28 September 2017, 21:28 IST

World Heart Day in the city was marked by programmes by various organisations on Thursday.

Fortis Hospital organised a two-day event, ‘Charge Your Heart’, to spread awareness on keeping the heart healthy. The hospital has set up a large LED heart connected to a cycle. Continuous pedalling keeps the light in the mounted heart on. The initiative is aimed at educating people on the importance of keeping the heart healthy

“People are becoming victims of heart disease due to a lot of factors including sedentary lifestyle and lack of awareness about keeping one’s heart healthy. Many of heart patients these days are between 30-40 years of age,” said Dr Vivek Jawli, chairman, Department of Cardio Vascular Sciences and chairman of the Medical Advisory Council, Fortis Hospitals.

Manipal Hospitals organised an awareness programme for CRPF jawans.

Their ‘Heart to Heart’ campaign conducted free checks on blood pressure, cholesterol and ECG. Cardiac consultations were facilitated across all its network hospitals.

A workshop was also organised to build awareness about the importance of a healthy heart and to educate jawans on the symptoms of heart ailments.

“We urge people to know the importance of heart care and take a step forward to save the lives of their loved ones,” said Sudarshan Ballal, chairman, Manipal Hospitals.

More programmes like campaigns and walkathons will be held on Friday, September 29, which is World Heart Day.
