The vacation bench of the High Court of Karnataka on Thursday directed the state government to maintain status quo with regard to defence land in Moodbidri in Dakshina Kannada district, which was transferred to the Department of Youth Services and Sports.

Sudarshan M, a resident of Moodbidri contended that the land in Marpadi village, Moodbidri hobli, has been named as ‘Military Maidan’ from a very long time. The deputy commissioner, without obtaining consent from defence authorities, transferred land to the Department of Youth Services and Sports.

The petitioner contended that the DC has no jurisdiction to pass an order of change of mutation of defence land. A division bench comprising Justice B V Nagarathna and Justice H B Prabhakar Sastry ordered status quo and issued notice to the state and the central governments.
