NGO to address gaps in Nali Kali scheme

A non-profit organisation is working on addressing gaps in the Nali Kali learning method on an experimental basis in schools in Yadgir district in Hyderabad Karnataka region.

Kalike, an associate organisation of Tata Trusts, is working in schools in the Yadgir block to address learning gaps in the activity-based method which was introduced by the state government in 2009.

Shivakumar D, executive director of Kalike, said a longitudinal study they conducted for over three years which regularly assessed 360 children showed that there were areas which the Nali Kali method did not address. “Particularly for language learning, the component of oral literacy was missing. There is no space for children to practise speaking skills. There is no guided reading or guided writing. Moreover, children in Class III require more attention.”

In consultation with the state education department, the organisation has now trained primary school teachers to address these gaps by introducing new activities on an experimental basis from this academic year. Teachers are provided with more material support such as picture books and they are trained to create their own material with local context. They are also trained to engage children to think critically and creatively. For example, instead of simply reading out stories, teachers are to ask children to think of possible outcomes in the middle of the story.

By the end of the year, the organisation will present their findings to the department and suggest the modifications that could be made in the method.

The project is part of Kalike’s Mission 2020, as part of which Tata Trusts signed a memorandum of understanding with the Yadgir district administration earlier this month.

The project titled ‘Kalike Samruddhi Upakram’ aims to improve human development indices in Yadgir district through projects in education, health, agriculture and skill development.
