Rains return to Bengaluru after a week's gap

Rains returned to the city after a gap of around a week, on Sunday night and Monday morning. The city recorded 54.3 mm, up to 8.30 am on Monday morning. Bengaluru rural recorded 74.4 mm, HAL airport recorded 44.2 mm and Kempegowda International Airport recorded 12 mm rainfall.

Rainfall continued till later in the day. Up to 5.30 pm, the city received 9.2 mm rainfall, HAL airport recorded 4.5 mm, while no rain was recorded at the international airport.

The city, from June 1 (onset of monsoon), received 867 mm rainfall (657 mm higher than normal). HAL airport received 733 mm rainfall, which is 303 mm higher than normal.

The city, from September 1 till date, received 431 mm rainfall. According to the records with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this is the highest the city has received for the month since 2005. The highest ever rain recorded for the month of September was 516.6 (in 1986). The city had recorded 352.6 in 2013 and 345.8 in 2009.

The weathermen have also issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across south interior Karnataka for the next two to three days. Heavy rainfall in isolation has been forecast over north interior Karnataka also.

Sunder M Metri, director incharge of IMD, Bengaluru, said that the city and parts of south and north interior Karnataka will experience rainfall because there is an east- west shear zone along latitude 12 degree north at 5.8 km above mean sea level. Under the influence of this system, south-west monsoon is vigorous over south interior Karnataka and active over north interior Karnataka.
