Manish, Prajna bag honours

Mysuru’s Manish and Bengaluru Urban’s Prajna Prakash clinched men’s and women’s 100 metres’ gold respectively on the opening day of the Dasara Games here at the Chamundi Vihar stadium on Friday.

Manish, a student of Mahatma Gandha Memorial College in Udupi, clocked 10.6 seconds to edge Bengaluru Urban’s K M Aiyappa (10.7 seconds). Local lad Mohammad Paigambar bagged the third spot in 10.8 seconds.

Manish thus defended the gold he had won last year. “I am delighted to be the champion for the second straight time. I thank my coach Zaheer Abbas for his guidance,” said Manish.

If the men’s race saw a tight finish, the women’s 100 metres was a lopsided affair. Prajna, an employee at the Forest Department in Bengaluru, eased to victory in 11.8 seconds. Mysuru’s Apsana Begum (12.00) and Bengaluru’s A T Dhaneshwari (12.10) completed the podium.

In long jump, athletes from Mysuru topped in the men’s and women’s sections. T R Anush won the men’s gold while the women’s crown was bagged by A Priya. A second year BCom student of Udupi Government College, Anush produced an effort of 7.29 metres, his personal best, to take the top spot on podium. SDM Ujire’s Priya came first with a leap of 5.45 metres.

Shot put: Meghana Devanga (Mysuru) 13.52M, 1.

Long jump: Priya A (Mysuru) 5.45M, 1.

4x400M relay: Mysuru (Chaitra R A, Navami H R, Likitha M, Apsana Begum) 3:48.97, 1.
