Colonel Hill monument: HC orders status quo

Last Updated 21 September 2017, 20:18 IST

The High Court on Thursday directed National Highways Authority of India to maintain status quo with regard to Colonel Hill monument at a hillock in Honnavar town of Uttara Kannada district.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice S K Mukherjee and Justice P S Dinesh Kumar, while hearing a PIL filed by J G Satyanarayana, member of Rotary Club, Honnavar, ordered notice to the Union government.

The petitioner contended that Colonel Hill monument was constructed in 1845 to honour Colonel Clement Hill. It is an architectural and engineering marvel on NH 66.

The NHAI has proposed to change the alignment of the highway to facilitate two hotel owners’ land. The proposal, if executed, will affect the Colonel Hillock. The petitioner has sought directions to NHAI not to damage/realign Colonel Hill monument while making the alignment of the national highway. The bench has adjourned the matter to October 03, 2017.
