The Mysuru Dasara Film Festival (MyDFF) kickstarted on Thursday with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurating it amid whistles and claps from a huge crowd that thronged Kalamandira.

A large gathering of youth, college students and film lovers were present at Kalamandira well in advance. In fact, all the seats were occupied one hour before the inauguration.

Kannada actors Aditya and Rachitha Ram, actor-director Nandakishore and others participated. Minister for Kannada and Culture Umashri said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has contributed a lot for the development of Kannada film industry. "The foundation for the ‘Film City’ at Himmavu, Nanjangud, will be held in November. The CM has also been requested to sort out the issue related to late actor Vishnuvardhan’s memorial," she said.

Janata theatres

The government has given approval for constructing 300 Janata theatres across the state to enable the poor and middle class people to watch Kannada films at an affordable price. Karnataka is the only state which gives importance to cultural activities when compared to other states, Umashri said.

She pointed out the contribution of Mysuru in the growth of Kannada film industry. She said that cinema related activities in Mysuru will start once the film city is set up.

"The Dasara film festival has got an international touch after being renamed as MyDFF. Film lovers will now get an opportunity to watch the best of films," she added.

A three minute video clipping of Kannada films was screened and a handbook on Dasara film festival was also released. The gathering observed silence for two minutes to mourn the passing away of Kannada artistes R N Sudarshan, B V Radha and Lambu Nagesh.

Piracy

Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce president Sa Ra Govindu appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to prevent ‘piracy’ in the district. He pointed out that a pirated video of Kannada film ‘Bharjari’ has been leaked. The producers have spent around Rs 22 lakh for the film. This would affect the film industry, he said.
Mini theatre

The Chief Minister also inaugurated a mini theatre on Kalamandira premises. The theatre has been constructed at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore to accommodate 200 people.

District-in-charge minister H C Mahadevappa, MP R Dhruvanarayana, MLAs Vasu, M K Somashekar, Deputy Commissioner D Randeep and others were present.
