CBFC fiat on film promos creates a stir

The Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) new rule, which obligates film producers to obtain the board’s permission before exhibiting any part of a film either on television or on social media, has created a stir.

The Board is in the process of obtaining an undertaking from the film producers that they will not exhibit any part of their upcoming film, any promotional song or even a scene on the social media without the Board’s permission.

Film producers will have to take the CBFC’s permission in future before they exhibit any scene or song from their movies.

Pawan Kumar, director-producer, told DH: “Liberal democratic countries have the system of awarding ratings for a movie. There is no system to prohibit the screening of any scene.”

The Central government should implement the recommendations of the Shyam Benegal committee on the rules and regulations for film certification and take note of the best practices in various parts of the world before enforcing anything, Kumar said.

Artistic expression

Sufficient space for artistic and creative expression must be given to end such controversies, the director-producer said.

When contacted, D N Srinivasappa, Regional Officer of the CBFC, reiterated that the producers and the directors should not exhibit any part of the film without obtaining the permission from the CBFC
