The rising canine population is posing a threat to the public, especially children, who fear to venture out of their houses in the city.

Packs of dogs can be seen moving at Gowrikoppalu, Vivekanagar, PWD guest house, Hosaline Circle and thronging meat and poultry shops. It has created fear among students and senior citizens as they pounce upon them all of a sudden, inflicting serious injuries.

Stray dogs had attacked more than 20 people in Belur a few days ago. A few children were also attacked in the city.

Meat and poultry shops discard leftovers inviting stray dogs which attack passersby. Senior citizen B N Ramaswamy complained that a few even allow their pet dogs to stray on the roads. Officials should take steps to sterilise dogs and prevent recurring of such incidents, he stressed.

When contacted, City Municipal Council president Anil Kumar said that the CMC are helpless as the Prani Daya Sangha threatens to file complaints if dogs are killed. However, measures would be taken to catch stray dogs, he assured.

The lifespan of dogs is 15 years and most yield four to five puppies every year. As at least three puppies survive, the number of canines have multiplied, Dr Shivakumar, veterinarian, department of Animal Husbandry said.
