ONGC, SER triumph

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation trounced South Central Railway 5-1 to win the third edition of the Bangalore Cup Invitation hockey tournament here on Friday.

Sumit Kumar put ONGC in front in the ninth minute. Abhay Kumar (18th) and Jaswant Singh (24th) added two more as ONGC took a commanding 3-0 lead. However, Vikas Chaudary cut the lead short for SCR through a penalty corner conversion three minutes before the break.

The Oilmen went into half-time with a 3-1 lead.

However, ONGC struck twice in the second period with Sumit getting one in the 57th minute and Navjot Singh completing the tally three minutes before the final hooter.

In the women’s section, South Eastern Railway won their maiden Bangalore Cup with a 3-0 win over Madhya Pradesh Hockey Association (MPHA).

Women: final: SER: 3 (Rajni S 27th, Alka Dung Dung 29th, Punam Tete 69th) bt MPHA: 0.

Third place: Hockey Haryana: 1 (Jaspreet 65th) bt Hockey Odisha: 1 (Rinki Kujur 42nd) 4-3 via shoot-out. 

Individual prizes: Men: Best goalkeeper: Jagdeep Dayal (Hockey Karnataka); defender: Gagandeep Singh (SCR); midfielder: Tyron Pereira (ONGC); forward: Kusha JP (SCR). Player of the tournament: Sumit Kumar (ONGC). Women: Best goalkeeper: Shweta (Haryana); defender: Bhagyashree (Karnataka); midfielder: Manmeet Kaur (MPHA); forward: Puman Barla (South Eastern Railway).
