A 40-year-old woman hanged her two minor daughters to death and committed suicide by hanging at her house in Nellorepuram, HAL Layout, on Wednesday.

Mahalakshmi, the deceased, was a housekeeping staff at the National Aeronautics Laboratories.

Her husband worked as a mason.

According to police, Mahalakshmi was under depression due to a property dispute within the family. Her two daughters, Mamata and Deepti, were students of Sacred Heart High School in Jeevanbima Nagar.

While Mamata was studying in class 10, Deepti was in class 3, police said. The incident came to light when her husband returned from work at around 6.30 pm. The doors were locked and his wife and daughters were not responding to his calls.

He then sought the help of his neighbours to break the door open. He saw
his wife and younger daughter hanging from an angle pipe attached to the ceiling.
The elder daughter was hanging from a ceiling fan, police said. There was no suicide note.

The police arrived at the spot and shifted the bodies to Bowring Hospital for postmortem.

They said the incident may have happened between 4.30 pm and 5 pm. The police suspect the couple was facing financial constraints. The HAL police registered a case of two murders and an unnatural death.
