Vendetta cases against Cong workers falling flat under Capt rule

Scores of cases registered against Congress workers in Punjab during the SAD-BJP rule allegedly under vendetta are falling flat. Nearly 100 such cases have so far come to fore. In seventy-nine such cases, it has been concluded after a thorough examination that these cases were false.

In another 19 cases, the commission- set up by Capt Amarinder Singh government in Punjab to probe false “vendetta” cases during Badal-led Akali rule- has recommended cancellation of FIR or withdrawal of case against the accused. More cases against Congress workers are likely to fall flat.

The Mehtab Singh Gill Commission of Inquiry that was constituted on April 5 this year is examining over 4200 cases and complaints it has received till date. An interim report of the commission was submitted to the chief minister today.

The commission has recommended that the home and judicial department should make a request to concerned Courts to cancel FIRs in cases which turn out to be false. Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday directed the home department to examine and implement the recommendations of the interim report in a time-bound manner.

Where the court accepts the cancellation report, the first informant or the complainant should be prosecuted, the Commission has recommended. It has added that the culprits should not be allowed to go scot free. In the remaining cases, the commission while recommending prosecution of the informant or the complainant has also suggested recovery of adequate compensation for the innocent victim from the investigating officer (IO).

In some cases, Justice Gill has also recommended action against police officers responsible for instigating the false case calling for the dismissal of such officers.
