Faulty sprinklers delay action

Last Updated 21 August 2017, 20:04 IST
The last day of the Group stage action in the Bengaluru Super Hockey League suffered an unusual delay after the sprinklers at the Hockey Stadium malfunctioned here on Monday.

The matches were held up for almost an hour as the cable that powers the sprinklers were burnt owing to wear and tear. The Karnataka State Hockey Association (KSHA) then had to arrange for a generator to complete the day’s assignment. KSHA is confident of getting a permanant solution in the next few days.

“Since the maintenance of the stadium is taken care by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), we could do nothing about it other than wait for somebody to show up from the DYES to repair the damage,” KSHA secretary K Krishnamurthy said.

“We had to go ahead with the matches so we arranged for a generator and resumed the proceedings after a small delay,” he added.

Once the problem was fixed, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) continued their fine run at the tournament with a dominant 5-1 win over Army Green.

For ONGC, Pramod Kumar claimed a double (58th, 63rd) while Harpal Singh (10th), Navjot Singh (54th) and Sumit Kumar (68th) struck goals apiece.

Rahul Kumar Yadav scored for Army Green in the 67th minute. Later, Indian international SV Sunil struck in the 24th minute to hand Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) a 1-0 win over Army Red in their final group game.

Reults: Pool A: ONGC: 5 (Harpal Singh 10th, Navjot Singh 54th, Pramod Kumar 58th, 63rd, Sumit Kumar 68th) bt Army XI Green: 1 (Rahul Kumar Yadav 67th); IOCL: 1 (Gurjinder Singh 35th) drew with SCR: 1 (Affan Yusuf 54th).

Pool B: BPCL: 1 (SV Sunil 24th) bt Army XI Red: 0.
