Last Updated 20 August 2017, 20:52 IST

The sudden downpour on Sunday spoiled the weekend plans for many Bengalureans. While some were happy with the cooling showers, those in low-lying areas kept their fingers crossed praying that the August 15 nightmare, when the city received 13 cm rainfall in just four hours, does not revisit them.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city received 3 mm rainfall till 5.30 pm on Sunday, while HAL airport and Kempegowda International Airport recorded 5 mm and 5.6 mm,  respectively.

The cloudy sky also helped in bringing the temperature down. The maximum and minimum temperature recorded in the city were 26.8 degree Celsius (two degree below normal) and 20.3 degree Celsius (eight degree below normal).

The weathermen have forecast that rainfall coupled with thundershowers and cloudy sky will continue for the next two days. They said, “There is a well-marked low pressure area over south east Vidarbha and its neighbourhood. There is also an associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to 9.5 km above mean sea level titling south westwards, because of which there is rainfall.”

From August 1 to 20, the city received 257 mm rainfall, against the normal of 147.1 mm. According to IMD records, this is higher than the average monthly total for August. In August 2011, the city had received a monthly total of 278.2 mm rainfall, which was the highest in the last seven years. Last year, in August, the city had received a monthly total of 82.8 mm and in 2015, the monthly total was 110 mm.

The highest ever monthly total for August was 309.8 mm in August 2008, the next was 287.1 mm recorded in 1998.

From June 1 till date, the city has received 344 mm rainfall, 52 mm above normal. From June 1 till August 1, the city had received 84.1 mm rainfall (in June, city had received 25.1 mm and in July, 59 mm).
