Flood situation in districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh adjoining Nepal worsened on Friday with the army being called for rescue and relief operations.

Movement of traffic on the Gorakhpur-Sonauli road towards Nepal came to a standstill as waters of Rohin river inundated Maniram township and the national highway, sources in the administration said.

Floods hit nearly 105 villages in the district, with 35 among them completely submerged and residents shifted to safer places, sources added.

A report from Siddhartnagar said army helicopters assisted in extending relief material to the affected.

Several eastern districts including Balrampur, Basti, Siddhartnagar, Barabanki, Ayodhya, Lakhimpur, Mahrajganj, Gonda are facing floods.

Conditions, however, became better in Assam and West Bengal, where no heavy rains have been reported.

With water levels receding in all rivers, flood situation in  north Bengal improved though the death toll crawled up to 52.

West Bengal Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee said roads and pipelines for supplying drinking water have been badly damaged in the catastrophe.

Nearly 15 lakh people have been affected by the floods in Coochbehar, Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Malda districts in north Bengal since July 21.

Train services to different destinations in north Bengal and Assam from Howrah and Sealdah stations remained suspended on the sixth consecutive day, a railway spokesman said. Bus services between the southern and northern parts of the state also remain suspended for the last five days owing to inundation of national highway 34 and 31 and state highways at different places in north Bengal.

In the northeastern state of Assam, 11 more people died in flood-related incidents, though officials said the situation has improved with no fresh spell of rains.

A report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said three persons died in Dhubri and two lost their lives in Morigaon in flood related incidents.

One death each was reported from Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, South Salmara, Kamrup and Kokrajhar districts.

So far, the third wave of flood has claimed 60 lives across the state, taking the overall death toll to 144 people this season in Assam, including eight in Guwahati. In Delhi, maximum temperatures stood at 37.8 degree Celsius and the minimum at 29 degree Celsius with no report of rainfall.
