Cong to wait and watch after JD(S) threatens to snap ties in BBMP

The Congress has decided to wait-and-watch on a possible break in its alliance with the JD(S) in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council ahead of the mayoral election.

JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday said there were enough reasons for the party to sever ties with the Congress and a final call will be taken after meeting all the councillors of the party.

“Let’s wait and see what the JD(S) will do,” Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G Parameshwara said on Friday.

The Congress will find it difficult to hold the reins of administration in the BBMP Council without the support of the JD(S). Although the BJP is the single largest party, it does not have the numerical strength to take control of the 260-member council, which includes city MLAs, MLCs and MPs with voting rights along with 198 elected corporators. Incumbent Mayor G Padmavathi of the Congress will finish her term in September.

Meanwhile, seven JD(S) MLAs - B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan (Chamarajapet), N Cheluvarayaswamy (Nagamangala), Akhanda Srinivas Murthy (Pulakeshinagar), H C Balakrishna (Magadi), Bhima Naik (Hagaribommanahalli), Ramesh Bandisiddegowda (Srirangapatna) and Iqbal Ansari (Gangavathi)- are all set to join Congress. “While the high command has cleared their joining the party, no decision has been taken on which seats they will be given tickets to contest from,” Parameshwara said.

Parameshwara dared the BJP to show evidence of corruption in the government. “The BJP was silent all these years. They are crying corruption now, only after Amit Shah gave them a dressing down. Let them come out with documents and we will answer.”
