Last Updated 17 August 2017, 18:44 IST
Following the success of Dipa Karmakar, a National Gymnastics Academy will soon be launched at the Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex. The Sports Complex Administrator Manjushree Dayanand, said that the Academy would be functional in a month’s time.

In the absence of the Gymnastics Federation, the stadium has been regularly hosting national coaching camps. Dipa’s coach BS Nandi, will be the high performance expert of the academy. Nandi will be assisted by chief national coach Gurdayal Singh Bawa along with three other coaches and an assistant coach. The academy aims to nurture gymnasts aged 8-22 years for elite competitions through a network of coaches/physical fitness and conditioning trainers as well as recovery and rehabilitation experts.

“The programme will have a strong focus on sports science and sports medicine. What we are looking to deliver is systematic, scientific and sustainable training programme,” said Manjushree.

The project is her brainchild and the experienced administrator promised to deliver nothing but the best.

“We will be looking at every aspect to make it a world class academy. Be it the fitness centre, the strength and conditioning equipment, rehabilitation, recovery, ice-bath, sauna or the jacuzzi, all will be a part of the top notch academy. We will also have a modern kitchen at par with the facilities of five star hotels. The food will be served in portions, and according to the requirement of a particular athlete.”

The services of renowned orthopaedic surgeon Dr Anant Joshi too have been roped in for the academy.
