Rain fury hits Kanteerava indoor stadium

Last Updated 16 August 2017, 19:01 IST
The heavy showers on Monday night caused damage to the playing surface of the Sree Kanteerava indoor stadium.

Built on a lake bed, it was no surprise the stadium complex was flooded close to a day. While not much was damaged on the outside, the playing area inside the indoor stadium took a hit with the newly-laid maple wood flooring suffering damage in the corners.

“Some water entered the stadium. We are drying it up,” said Anupam Agrawal, director of the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES). “It will take another couple of days. After that it needs some re-polishing.”

The stadium authorities were quick to get to the task with the water being pumped out without much delay. “Yesterday (on Tuesday) we took action immediately. We started by 7 am and by 2 pm all the water was pumped out. Generally we take a couple of days but not this time. So there wasn’t stagnation for a long while,” Agrawal explained.

However, Agrawal stated that though the Rs 3-crore refurbishment that the the facility underwent last year had given the stadium a much needed face lift, poor drainage system around the stadium complex had resulted in the playing area being affected.  “It (drainage) is not complete. Work has started, but still not completed. It had to be done on the Sampangiramanagar side. That’s was one of the reasons why water entered the stadium,” he explained.

With Premier Futsal, a franchise based futsal league, set to be played at the facility next month, Agrawal was confident the stadium will be ready for the tournament in time.
