Normal life remains affected as heavy rains pound TN

Last Updated 16 August 2017, 11:25 IST
Normal life continued to be affected for the second day in Tamil Nadu after heavy rains battered the state due to a trough over the Bay of Bengal. The weather office has predicted more downpour in the next two days.

"The trough in the Bay of Bengal now runs to south coastal Tamil Nadu across Rayalaseema above mean sea level. Due to this system, heavy rain is expected to occur over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 48 hours", a senior weather official said on Wednesday.

He said strong winds from the south westerly direction with speeds reaching 45-55 KMPH were likely along and off the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast during the same period.

Chengam in Tiruvannamalai district received maximum rainfall of 90 mm during the last 24 hours followed by Hogenekal in Dharmapuri district, which registered 80 mm downpour during the same period.

The heavy rain on Tuesday evening left several areas in Chennai and its outskirts water logged, causing traffic snarls on several arterial roads with people having to wade through knee deep water.

Several trees were uprooted along state and national highways due to the rain and the accompanying heavy winds.
