BMRCL's I-Day circular irks employees

Last Updated 14 August 2017, 21:20 IST

While not many would protest compulsory celebration of Independence Day, a circular sent by BMRCL making attendance mandatory for all, including those who have to work on the night shift, has irked employees on the night shift.

Employees shared their concern with DH on condition of anonymity. "We work in three shifts. While those on general shift between 6.30 am and 2.30 pm have no problem in attending the celebration, we can't understand why employees on the second and night shift are forced to attend the event," a senior employee told DH.

A copy of the circular made available to DH stated: "(Independence) Day should not be treated as holiday. All employees, except those detailed for essential duty, should participate in the function, including those working in 'B' and 'C' shifts."

"How can employees on 'B' shift (2.30 pm-9.30 pm) and 'C' shift (9.30 pm-6.30 am) be forced to attend a programme at 7.45 in the morning? Employees staying in far places have to run to Baiyappanahalli in the morning, attend the programme till afternoon and continue the work till night. We wish the management had considered the employees' interests as well," another employee said.
