Wadiyar era canals shrink due to rampant encroachment

Last Updated 14 August 2017, 20:05 IST

Not just Dewan Poornaiah Canal, many big and small canals crisscrossing the city have been encroached upon by the private individuals.

The Wadiyar kings had built two canals in order to supply fresh water to the Kukkrahalli lake, but, due to lack of maintenance the canals have been lying in a deplorable condition, and their bunds have been encroached upon by private parties. Now, a major portion of the bundshave turned into business centers.

One canal drains rainwater to the Kukkrahalli lake from Bisilu Maramma Temple, near Thonachi Koppal. The canal passes through Bogadi Road and the University of Mysuru, before reaching the lake. Another canal connects the lake from Jodi Basava Temple, via UoM campus, Open Air theater and UGC-Academic Staff College.

However, the bund of the canal near Vishwa Manava Double Road has been partially encroached upon on the stretch between UoM campus and the temple.

Many private people have erected structures to do business.
The civic authorities have been chalking out plans to fill Kukkrahalli lake with rainwater and recycled waste water.
