Four people were caught trying to exchange demonetised currency notes for new ones in the city on Friday.

The Viveknagar police also recovered demonetised notes worth Rs 3 crore from them. The suspects are Ayub (50), Azeem-ur-Rehman (52) and Azeem-ur-Rehman Khan, all three residents of Shanthinagar, and Ateek from Pulakeshinagar. They were carrying the notes in separate bags in a car when they were caught at around 10.30 pm.

The police were on a special drive near the Srinivagilu signal in Viveknagar and the suspects tried to speed away. “We chased them and stopped the car,” said a police inspector.

The suspects tried to jump out of the car and escape, but in vain. The police checked the car and recovered the bags containing the notes.

The suspects said they wanted to hand over the notes to a person who had promised a 25% commission for exchanging the demonetised notes.

The police are interrogating the suspects to identify the persons who had offered the commission.
