Alumni, students divided over shifting college

To shift and start over with new infrastructure or stay and develop the 100-year old campus founded by Sir M Visvesvaraya- faculty, alumni and students are divided on this issue.

A senior faculty member, who has been with UVCE for decades, says that the centenary grant will hardly be enough to create infrastructure on the new campus.

“But, this money will be sufficient to give the existing campus a facelift.

KR Circle is an ideal location, in the heart of the city, with many other colleges close by. The college is doing well and placements are good, too. We just need to invest on strengthening it,” the lecturer said.

A source said that majority of the faculty is against the shift. Staff who have been with the institution for several years are sentimentally attached to it.

A member of the UVCE Foundation set up by alumni, says that university authorities should accept the opportunity to shift and develop a new campus.

“The environment at KR Circle is not conducive to academics because of the traffic and pollution. Moreover, there is no space for further development. Bangalore University has offered 50 acres of land.

“Extra labs, seminar halls and other facilities can be set up. The alumni are also willing to contribute towards these if they shift,” the alumnus said. They, however, want the existing campus to be retained as central office for the college, to be used as a placement cell, incubation centre and for trainings.

Actor and filmmaker Ramesh Aravind is also an alumnus of UVCE.

Though he does have fond memories of the campus, he says that attachment to the century-old buildings should not compromise the best interests of students. “The buildings are in a shambles right now and it is nightmarish.

“If they can develop the existing campus and retain the historic buildings, it will be the best solution,” he said.
