Congress campaign to take on BJP on social media

Last Updated 11 August 2017, 19:54 IST

Ahead of the 2018 Assembly polls, the  KPCC  has decided to take the fight to the BJP on social media.

The state Congress has announced INC Karnataka Digital, a platform on which the party’s supporters and workers can receive updates on the party and the achievements of the government. Those who want to register - digital volunteers, as the party wants to call them - can give a missed call to 8881232018. These digital volunteers will strengthen the Congress’ digital presence across platforms such as Facebook, and Twitter, the party hopes.

“Social media is playing a very big role and the BJP has effectively misused it to its benefit. We don’t want to lag behind in leveraging the power of social media,” KPCC working president Dinesh Gundu Rao said.

For starters, all Congress workers in every booth will be linked to the INC Karnataka Digital platform.

“We have our people active on social media, but they are not organised or synchronised. We want to bring them onto a single platform.  After a soft launch in Mysuru on Thursday, over 10,000 people had given missed calls,” the former minister added.

The party also hopes to use the platform to “counter fake news and lies the BJP and its supporters spread,” Rao said.

Interestingly, the party had critiqued the BJP’s earlier ‘missed call’ campaign. Rao was quick to clarify that the INC Karnataka Digital was not a membership drive. “We will contact those who give us a missed call,” he said.
