MTech student jumps from 7th floor of IIITB hostel

A fourth-year MTech (Integrated) student at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-B) jumped from the seventh floor of his hostel building in the early hours of Friday.

The deceased, Goluguri Sai Sharath, hailed from Andhra Pradesh. The victim’s father Kodandarama Reddy is an officer in the Income Tax Department, Hyderabad.

The cause of death is yet to be ascertained, said the police. Sarath had moved to Bengaluru about four years ago to pursue MTech. He was staying at the hostel on the college campus.

Sarath returned to the hostel after attending his friend’s birthday party on Thursday night. He woke up around 4.30 am when his room-mate was fast asleep. He went to the seventh floor and jumped down around 4.50 am.

“The hostel security guard heard a thud and rushed there. He found Sarath bleeding profusely,” DCP (Southeast) Dr Boralingaiah M B told DH.

He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Sarath was a promising student and had a good reputation among staff and students. He was soft-spoken and always chose to remain quiet, added the police.

There were reports that he was under depression, but police denied such reports.

“He was an introvert, but didn’t have any psychological issues,” said a police officer.

The police clarified that Sarath did not leave behind any suicide note. The post-mortem was conducted at Victoria Hospital and the body was handed over to parents.
