Stalking case: crucial CCTV footage 'missing'

Last Updated 08 August 2017, 03:18 IST
The CCTV camera footage that could have been a crucial evidence in the high-profile case of stalking and harassment of 28-year-old DJ Varnika Kundu may be “missing”, it is learnt.

The role of the Chandigarh Police, too, has come under the scanner. They have been accused of acting under pressure to shield accused Vikas Barala, son of Haryana BJP president Subhash Barala.

The investigating officers are dilly-dallying to even book the accused on charges of abduction, as initially stated by them.

Varnika is the daughter of senior Haryana cadre IAS officer V S Kundu. Three days after the FIR was registered, the police on Monday said they have sought legal opinion over adding abduction charges against the accused. The two accused walked free within hours as the police did not book them under any non-bailable sections despite Varnika giving her statement before the magistrate. The police remain non-committal on the “missing” CCTV footage. All they said was that they were “doing a technical analysis of all the footages”. Majority of the cameras were non-functional on the route, sources said.

After the initial torment, Varnika decided not to hide behind any veil to conceal her identity. She maintains that she has no reason to hide her identity as she has done no wrong. There have been attempts to disgrace her. Facebook posts were also put by a relative of the accused showing the victim in bad light. The posts, however, were later removed.

The incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The accused in an SUV chased the victim for long, blocked her way several times as she sped away towards her house in nearby Panchkula. One of the accused got out of the SUV and attempted to enter the victim’s car, but she managed to escape.
