Gandhi, Satya named for Dronacharya

Late Ramakrishnan Gandhi and Satyanarayana were recommended for Dronacharya awards here on Saturday.

Gandhi, who was the national race-walking coach before he passed away last year at age 54, had trained a clutch of walkers to success in international meets, including Asia race walking champion in the 20km event, Gurmeet Singh.

Hailing from Vellore in Tamil Nadu, Gandhi was a long distance runner and also a steeplechaser, before he moved to coaching after taking an NIS diploma.

Satyanarayana was the mentor of Rio Paralympics gold-medallist high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan, whose name has been recommended for Arjuna award. Also recommended for the Dronacharya award is kabaddi coach Heera Nand Kataria.

Meanwhile noted hockey coach P A Raphel is among the dignitaries recommended for the Life Achievement Award. Brij Bhushan Mohanty, who dedicated his life to boxing, has also been named for the prestigious honour.

Bhupender Singh (Athletics), Syed Shahid Hakim (football) and Sumarai Tete (hockey) have been named for Dhyanchand award.

Recommended names:

Dronacharya award: Late Ramakrishnan Gandhi (athletics), Heera Nand Kataria (kabaddi) and Satyanarayan (para athletics).

Lifetime achievement award: GSSV Prasad (badminton), Brij Bhushan Mohanty (boxing), PA Raphel (hockey), Sanjay Chakravathy (shooting) and Roshan Lal (wrestling).

Dhyanchand award: Bhupender Singh (athletics), Syed Shahid Hakim (football) and Sumarai Tete (hockey).
