Women students struggle in and out of college buildings

Last Updated 30 July 2017, 17:33 IST

With the Government First Grade College for Women functioning from a rented building, the college is shifted very often, which is hampering the educational activities and admission in the college.

The college was started in 2014-15. It functioned on the premises of the PU College on Beloor Road initially and later on DIET premises. In January 2016, the college was shifted to IDSG Government College PG building, at Jyothinagara, but there is shortage of classrooms in the building. A room contains the library, a BA classroom, the principal’s room and the office.

During the current academic year, permission has been given to start post-graduation courses in Commerce and Mathematics at the IDSG Government College. The college principal in-charge Basavaraju has already asked the women’s college to vacate its classrooms.

At present, the college offers BA and BCom with 150 students pursuing their studies. Sixteen students have been admitted to first-year BA while 42 students for BCom during the academic year. “The repeated shifting of the college has caused hardship to the students. Enrolment of students has declined drastically in the last two years. Some students have asked for transfer certificates to join other college.

“To increase the enrolment and also to provide a conducive environment for educational activities, it is better to shift the college to heart of the town,” lecturers told DH.

Principal K Damodar Gowda said, “At present, the PU College functions from the Industry and Commerce Department’s building at NMC Circle. A new building has been constructed at the housing board colony for the PU college. We have appealed to the deputy commissioner to hand over the building of industry and commerce department once the PU college is shifted.”
The district administration has sanctioned two acres of land on Survey number 535 at Hiremagaluru for construction of a building for the Government First Grade College for Women.

“The land is situated behind AIT, away from the town and will not benefit the college,” feel the college staff.

A final year BA student said, “It would benefit the students if the college is situated inside the town limits. The authorities should ensure that the college has all the basic facilities.”
