Farmers denied relief due to state's failure: Pralhad Joshi

Farmers in Dharwad district are not getting compensation under the crop insurance scheme due to ineffective implementation of the programme by the Karnataka government, BJP MP Prahlad Joshi said on Thursday.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha, Joshi said that in Dharwad district, 86,000 farmers have availed the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) and farmers were supposed to get Rs 172 crore compensation due to crop loss in the 2016 season. Though the Centre has released its share of money, due to the failure of the state government, the insurance company is not releasing money to farmers, he alleged.

Tata AIG, the company which was supposed to distribute Rs 172 crore as compensation to farmers, has so far paid only Rs 61 crore, he said.

The company claimed that due to non-availability of beneficiary farmers’ bank accounts and others details, it is unable to pay the remaining amount.

The Centre must intervene to ensure that the state government provides the farmers’ details to the insurance company to enable it to distribute the compensation at the earliest, he said.
