Last Updated 27 July 2017, 18:52 IST

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has taken up an initiative to plant Bougainvillea saplings at the space available under the elevated Metro line.

As many as 30 varieties of Bougainvillea saplings have been identified to beautify the space. and each route will be identified with a specific variety of ornamental tree.

Tenders have been called to maintain and beautify the space. About 700 spots have been identified in the first phase of Metro. “Bougainvillea has been chosen as it is a unique plant which bears flowers throughout the year. Also, the plant bears flowers of different colours in different weather conditions. The plant does not get affected by worms easily,” said a senior official of BMRCL.

However, S G Neginal, retired IFS officer, has suggested that it is better to include a variety of plant species instead of growing just one species. “It will be good if BMRCL plants Parijatha or Singapore Cherry plants along with Bougainvillea,” he said.
