A seven-letter word coined in 2011 to describe devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Note that combined the features of a phone and a bigger device is Phablet. An important crop that has three sub-species called Indica, Japonica and Javanica is rice.

These were among the questions that 10-year-olds cracked at the Deccan Herald inter-school quiz competition on Wednesday. Students from various schools listened as the quiz master dished out one question after another. The auditorium reverberated with claps and cheers as students took on the most difficult questions with ease. The teachers joined the students in cracking the questions.

“It is an incredible experience to be a part of this event. We prepared through the help of the newspaper, general knowledge books and the guidance of our teachers. The quiz master’s way of asking questions made it all the more exciting,” said Sanath Kumar G, a student of Class VII of Aryan Presidency School.

A session that tested the students’ knowledge of scientists and their medical inventions was one of the highlights. From the inventor of the microscope to the inventor of the small pox vaccine, the students answered the questions with ease. The audience was not to be left behind as they answered some of the toughest questions that the finalists couldn’t. Reva Mitra, a student of Shishya School, said, “We have participated in a number of quiz competitions, but this is my favourite one so far. The questions are very challenging and interesting, making us rack our brains for answers.” For the junior finals, seven tie-breaker questions were asked to find the third prize winners. Professor Arul Mani from Karnataka Quiz Association made the quiz a thrilling experience. His simple explanation set the tone for an invigorating quiz.

Over 100 schools and 326 students from across the city participated in the event.
