Demanding release of water into canals in the KRS command area, Congress workers staged a protest and laid siege to the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam’s office at KRS in the taluk on Tuesday.

Hundreds of workers, led by district convenor M Puttegowda, urged the officials to release water into the canals. He said that the canals were laid 80 years ago and this is the first time water has not been released during monsoon. “The farmers are already worried as they are not able to take up agricultural activities. There is insufficient water for drinking and feeding the livestock. If at least 25% of the water that is being released to Tamil Nadu is diverted into the canals, farmers will benefit. The government should immediately issue an order to release the water,” Puttegowda said.

Earlier, Congress workers visited several government offices and listed out a few demands. They first visited the DySP’s office in the town and urged him to install signal lights and road humps on the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway at accident prone zones. Later, they visited the PWD and BEO’s offices and urged BEO Ruksana and Assistant Engineer Ramakrishnegowda to provide basic amenities to the government schools and to renovate the dilapidated government school buildings in the taluk.

They also visited Sri Ranganathaswami temple and sought distribution of prasad to the devotees similar to the practice followed in temples in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts.
