The Jayanagar police claimed to have solved over two dozen chain-snatching cases, reported in 17 police stations across the city, by arresting two thieves.

The suspects have been identified as Tabrez (30), a resident of HBR Layout, and Arun Kumar (36), a resident of Mahalakshmi Layout. Police have seized 29 gold chains, weighing 1.2 kg, worth Rs 35 lakh.

According to the sources, the duo wanted to raise money to develop a ‘school app’ and took to chain-snatching to finance the app. They met each other while serving a jail term at the Central Prisons, Parappana Agrahara. The duo decided to lead a normal life after being released. Anil Kumar planned to develop an app containing information about schools and educational institutions. A developer told them they would need at least Rs 2 lakh to develop an app. The suspects then decided to rob a few people to arrange funds for developing the school app.

According to the plan, Kumar stole a bike parked in front of a mall in Malleswaram. Using the bike, Kumar and Tabrez robbed 29 people in three months across the city, said, Praveen Sood, City Police Commissioner. “A special team formed by DCP South nabbed the suspects based on a CCTV footage of one of the chain snatching incidents,” he added.
