BJP files plaint against CM, George for 'scam' in Indira Canteens

BJP leader N R Ramesh has accused the ruling Congress of large-scale irregularities in the proposed Indira Canteens, which will offer tiffin and meals at subsidised rates.

At a press conference here on Thursday, Ramesh stated that there is a misuse of Rs 65 crore and he has lodged a complaint against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Bengaluru Development Minister K J George with the Lokayukta and Anti-Corruption Bureau in this regard.

“According to government estimates, the construction cost of each kitchen and canteen is Rs 39 lakh and Rs 28 lakh respectively. The canteen will be built on 900 sqft. Thus, construction of each 100 sqft will be Rs 2.9 lakh whereas in reality, the cost is only Rs 95,000 per 100 sqft.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister U T Khader has pooh-poohed the charges of deflated estimates for setting up the proposed Indira Canteens in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits.

Speaking to reporters in Mangaluru, Khader, who is also a member of the Indira Canteen Implementation Committee, said: “The BJP has been proving a hurdle in every good deed of the government.”

Indira Canteens is one of the model concepts in the nation, but the saffron party is pulling all stops to stop the same from becoming a reality. It has become their habit from the past four years, lodging several complaints which have eventually turned out to be a farce, said the minister.
