Wadiyar's 98th birth anniversary celebrated

The 98th birth anniversary of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar, the 25th and last maharaja of the erstwhile Mysore state, was celebrated by various organisations in the city on Tuesday.

The erstwhile maharaja’s daughter-in-law Pramoda Devi Wadiyar inaugurated the celebrations organised by Jayachamarajendra Urs Education Trust. One of his grandsons Varchaswi Siddalingaraje Urs, Mayor M J Ravi Kumar, MCC Commissioner G Jagadish, and Corporator H N Srikantaiah were present.

Retired professor Shivaram Malavalli, principal Mahjabeen and musician Manjunath Mysore took part in the celebrations at the University College of Fine Arts. Floral tributes were offered to a portrait of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar.

Srikrishna Gana Sabha hosted a musical ballet titled ‘Raja Yogeendra’ by Kanchana Sisters Sriranjani and Shruthiranjani along with their disciples Vaistnavi Datta, Harsha, Yadunandan, Kaustuba, Nagaraj Sharma and Nagachethan, directed by R S Nandakumar.

Instrumental music was rendered by T V Narasinhan on veena, Tandava Murthy on violin and M R Manjunath on mridanga.

Radhika Nanda Kumar choreographed a special feature titled ‘Raja Natyam’ featuring Mysore-style Bharatanatyam repertoire. Veena Upadhya, Nagalakshmi, Vyshnavi Datta and Kriti were part of it.

BJP members, representatives of Karnataka Sena Pade, Karnataka Rajya Arasu Maha Sabha, Arasu Chinthakara Chavadi and various organisations paid floral tributes to the statue of Jayachamaraja Wadiyar and also his portrait to mark the celebrations.
