Last Updated 17 July 2017, 13:52 IST

With heavy flood water from Odisha joining Nagavali and her tributary Vamsadhara, at least 15 blocks of Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh were put on high alert.

According to revenue officials, the situation at Totapalli barrage in Vizianagaram district has been monitored round the clock as a low-pressure trough in the Bay of Bengal could aggravate the flood.

As such many of the low laying areas along Nagavali River in Andhra Pradesh have been inundated and the road traffic between Odisha and AP is said to have affected with flood waters breaching interstate highway near Kuneru.

Similarly, train traffic between both the states was hampered with flood waters over flowing above danger level on Bridge number 588 between Singapur-Therubali in Rayagada-Titlagarh section of Sambalpur Division of the East Coast Railway. Several trains have been cancelled, short-terminated, diverted or rescheduled on Monday due to heavy rains.

Most of the agency area in Vizianagaram district is currently under the grip of flood waters and communication between the main land and the agency area has been severed. In Srikakluam town also flood water entered all low laying residential areas.

Srikakulam district collector Dhanunjaya Reddy has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and advised people in low laying areas to move to shelters. Control rooms have been set up in Tekkali, Palakonda and Srikakulam divisional headquarters to help people in distress.

On the other hand, authorities have been releasing flood waters from Totapalli barrage by lifting all the gates. It is reported that at least one lakh cusecs of flood water from upstream reached the reservoir forcing the irrigation authorities to release it into the sea. Similarly, water from Vamsadhara has been released from Gotta barrage.

Meanwhile, the weather office here has forecast heavy rains in both the Telugu states till 19 of this month under the influence of a low-pressure trough. Heavy rains have been lashing several parts of Telangana including Hyderabad city since Sunday affecting normal life.
