Protesting convicts moved out of Bengaluru prison

Last Updated 16 July 2017, 19:42 IST
The prisons department on Sunday moved a number of convicts out of the Bengaluru Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara to jails in other cities in the wake of protests by them. Sources said the department identified 18 prisoners who continued protests till late in the night on Saturday and took a decision to shift them to prisons in Mysuru, Ballari, Dharwad, Belagavi, Vijayapura and Kalaburagi.

Some prisoners resorted to a flash protest inside the Parappana Agrahara central prison and levelled charges of corruption against senior officers. Three convicts each were shifted to prisons in Belagavi and Kalaburagi, while four each were sent to prisons in Dharwad, Vijayapura and Ballari around 1 am.

Earlier, four prisoners were shifted to the Mysuru central prison on Saturday. Three convicts - Ananth Murthy, Balu and Long - were shifted to the central prison at Hindalga in Belagavi. The shifting has no connection with any dispute, said T P Shesha, superintendent of the Hindalga prison.

According to a senior officer, the convicts were shifted because they attempted to air grievances against senior jail authorities, including the chief jail superintendent. DGP (Prisons) H N Sathyanarayan Rao visited the prison on Saturday morning, while D Roopa, DIG (Prisons), came there at around 3 pm.

A section of inmates raised slogans in favour of Roopa and accused chief superintendent Krishna Kumar of harassment. They said they were not happy with the conduct of the prison’s chief superintendent and accused him of beating them up for airing their grievances on several occasions.

Two groups of inmates staged a flash protest after Roopa departed from the prison. Krishna Kumar sent them to their cells, while some of them continued the protest. The decision to shift them to other prisons was taken as they did not withdraw the protest even late in the night.

A large number of relatives of convicts who were shifted to other prisons gathered at the central prison and expressed anguish over the decision. They alleged that the convicts were shifted to other prisons as they tried to meet Roopa, seeking her help in ending the exploitation by senior officials.

Inmate misses father’s funeral

A convict could not attend the funeral of his father as the prison authorities restricted the entry of his family members who wanted to inform him about the death. Lakshminarasimhaiah, the father of Rajanna (a convict from Tumakuru), passed away in the wee hours of Sunday. Lakshminarasimhaiah’s wife Aruna and relative Prema came to the prison to meet Rajanna. However, the authorities denied permission to them.

Rajanna’s advocate pleaded with the authorities to grant permission to meet Rajanna. He pointed out that the court was functioning on Sunday to obtain permission for Rajanna to attend his father’s funeral. However, the authorities did not entertain the plea.
