The state Cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod for white-topping of 24 major arterial roads in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits at a cost of Rs 800 crore to make them pothole free, increase their durability and lifespan.

Law Minister T B Jayachandra told reporters after the meeting that a total of 53.67 km of roads will be white-topped, wherein a concrete overlay will be laid on top of the existing bituminous stretches, making them superior and increasing their load carrying capacity.

The roads identified for white-topping include busy arterial roads in the Central Business District - Lavelle Road, K H Road, Dispensary Road, Annaswamy Mudaliar Road around Ulsoor Lake, Lady Curzon Road, St Philomena Road, Meenakshi Koil Street, among others.

Other stretches are Mysuru Road (4.8 km), Tumakuru Road (6.2 km), Hosur Road (7.65 km), Sarjapura Road (5.3 km), Bannerghatta Road (4.2 km), Kanakapura Road (4.6 km) Magadi Road (3.85 km). Stretches in ITPL, Dinnur and Koramangala have also identified.

Experts are of the opinion that white-topping of roads will help in doing away with the annual cycle of redoing roads and filling potholes. The BBMP recently white-topped Nrupathunga Road.
